There was a new strongman in California. This was unfortunate. He was the usual sort, of course. Money buying loyalty, fear buying power. All fairly standard, of course, and a situation he was already intimately familiar with. The trouble was, this man believed that quantity was more important than quality. Which was why he was now retreating after blowing up one of his ammunition depots. With a few dozen angry armed men trying to hunt him down.

He did take significant satisfaction from the idea that he had put a serious dent in the Masquerade Ball that Alvarez had been throwing. A lovely little attempt to elicit support from the well-known names and the high-born. That might have taken a bit of a stumble. That thought made him grin, as he moved from rooftop to rooftop in the compound.

If Elena knew what he was doing, she would likely strangle him. Because this was not precisely a safe activity. He could only be pleased that she was far away from here.
